System Reliability Engineer

Wärtsilä Marine Power aims to enhance the business of its marine and oil & gas industry customers by enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services.

The adoption of future fuels to enable decarbonization for the marine and energy market poses many new challenges. Furthermore, the general trend to powertrain hybridization and electrification opens new dimensions for engine layout and powertrain optimization.

To fulfil new operability and safety requirements, various technologies for internal combustion engines are being developed, leading to increased system complexity.

For these reasons, the Systems Reliability team within System Integration and Performance department is looking for a new team member to support Wärtsilä transformation towards a decarbonization path.

The person will support the R&D Business in the product and technology development process focusing on the assessment and investigation of hazardous scenarios brought by future-fuels adoption. This requires knowledge of reliability engineering best practices and confidence in modelling and simulation techniques.
System Reliability Engineer will contribute with her/his competencies to improve risk awareness culture, engaging different expertise areas in the risk assessment process and enabling investigation of critical scenarios and failure phenomena by implementing a Model Based approach.

The position will also require the ability to work in an international and cross-functional environment. The position is offered on a permanent basis, and the successful candidate can be located either in Finland or Italy. We also offer possibilities for hybrid remote work.


In this role, your primary responsibilities include:

  • Provide technical support to the company’s internal functions during the product development.
  • Supporting the design of innovative products utilizing dedicated risk analysis.
  • Supporting troubleshooting in case of failure or malfunction within the planned protocols.
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with internal and external cooperation partners.
  • Documenting activities and know-how developments by creating technical reports and calculation guidelines.
  • Supporting colleagues and internal partners in their decision-making process by providing technical expertise within your own technical domain.


To succeed in this role, you should hold an MSc. in Mechanical or other equivalent engineering fields. Also, applicants with an MSc in Physics, Mathematics or BSc. with extensive work experience will be considered. Ph.D. is a valuable plus.
You have an interest in engine technologies. You possess an analytical mindset; you are systematic, curious, open-minded, and focused. Fluent in English both written and spoken, solid in MS office.

Knowledge or practical experience within the following areas and tools are required:

  • Reliability engineering theory.
  • Statistics and probability concepts.
  • Risk assessment techniques both qualitative (i.e., FMEA, etc ) & quantitative (i.e., FTA, Monte Carlo, etc).
  • Product development processes.
  • Data analysis competencies are an additional asset.
  • Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python programming languages are a plus.


The position will also require:

  • Ability to work in an international environment.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, with an emphasis on innovation.
  • Ability to integrate areas of knowledge and to interface with specialists in different areas.
