System Simulation Engineer

Wärtsilä Marine Power aims to enhance the business of its marine and oil & gas industry customers by enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services.

Future fuel adoption to enable decarbonization of the marine and energy market poses many new challenges. Furthermore, the general trend of powertrain hybridization and electrification opens new dimensions for engine layout and optimization.

To fulfil new operability and safety requirements, various technologies for internal combustion engines are being developed, leading to increased system complexity. For these reasons, Systems Reliability team within System Integration and Performance department is looking for a new team member to support Wärtsilä transformation towards a decarbonization path.

As part of the team, you will be asked to participate in challenging Research and Development projects focusing on new technology development to enable the adoption of future fuels.

You will support the team and internal stakeholders in the product development and troubleshooting process, managing and executing R&D activities, including system modelling, to support engineering teams and speed up decision-making.

As a Systems Simulation Engineer, you will build mathematical models, perform system analysis, evaluate system performance, and collaborate with mechanical and automation engineers to develop/validate overall system functionalities using a model-based approach. The position will also require the ability to work in an international and cross-functional environment.

The position is offered permanently, and the successful candidate can be either in Finland (Vaasa, Helsinki, Turku) or Italy (Trieste, Genova). We also offer possibilities for hybrid remote work.

 

Responsibilities
In this role, your primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide technical support to the company’s internal functions during the product development.
  • Supporting the design of innovative products utilizing dedicated simulation activities.
  • Supporting troubleshooting in case of failure or malfunction within the planned protocols.
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with internal and external cooperation partners.
  • Documenting activities and know-how developments by creating technical reports and guidelines.
  • Supporting colleagues and internal partners in their decision-making process by providing technical expertise within your technical domain.

 

Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should hold an MSc. in Mechanical, Mechatronics, or other equivalent engineering fields. Also, applicants with an MSc in Physics, Mathematics, or BSc. with extensive work-related experience will be considered. Ph.D. is a valuable plus.
You should also be interested in internal combustion engines and automation control development. You possess an analytical mindset, you are systematic, curious, open-minded, and focused. Fluent in written and spoken English and solid in MS office.

Knowledge or practical experience within the following areas and tools are required:

  • Model-Based Systems Engineering and System Modeling languages.
  • 1D System simulation and Optimization tools (familiarity with GT-SUITE, Simulink, or similar tools is an advantage).
  • Familiarity with MiL, SiL, and HiL methodologies.
  • Standardized data exchange protocols (FMI/FMU) for co-simulation.
  • Automation control development applications.
  • Matlab and/or Python programming languages.
  • CAE tools (familiarity with Siemens NX).
  • Understanding of product development processes.

 

The position will also require the following:

  • Ability to work in an international environment.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, with an emphasis on innovation.
  • Ability to integrate areas of knowledge and to interface with specialists in different areas.
