System Simulation Expert

Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians - put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä's purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

We are now looking for a

System Simulation Expert

to join our Systems Reliability team within R&D and Engineering in Power supply to support Wärtsilä's transformation towards a decarbonization path. The position is permanent, and the preferred locations are Trieste (Italy) and Vaasa (STH, Finland), but Turku (Finland) can also be considered.

What you will be doing

We seek an intellectually curious engineer with solid mathematics and theoretical skills eager to apply modern modeling and simulation methodologies to solve complex and challenging design and processing problems.
As part of the team, you will be asked to participate in Research and Development projects by defining, managing, and executing modeling and calculation activities.
You will be responsible for efficiently building accurate simulation models with a different range of complexity, from system level with imposed component characteristics to more detailed component analysis. You will focus on standalone or coupled simulations for various engine components/ systems facing new design challenges like the introduction of alternative fuels, thus supporting specialists’ decision-making processes.
Your work will focus mainly on system-level 1D-CFD simulations. Typical predictions of interest may include, but are not limited to, dimensioning components and systems, investigating steady-state or transient conditions, and demonstrating the system's response in equilibrium or during a particular event (e.g., failure state).
As a System Simulation Expert, you will focus on integrating 1D-CFD models with other engine models, studying, for instance, applications where hydraulic models need to be integrated with other subsystems and modeling domains (e.g., mechanical, thermal, electrical, and controller subsystems) to capture interactions and optimize overall system behavior.
In addition, as a System Simulation Expert, you will be responsible for maintaining and developing internal modeling and simulation guidelines, securing the implementation of state-of-the-art methodologies and complementary interaction with 3D-CFD simulations.

As a System Simulation Expert, your work will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Supporting the design of innovative products employing dedicated modeling and calculation competencies.
  • Support troubleshooting in case of failure or malfunction within the planned protocols.
  • Establish and develop analysis methods for determining and securing system and component reliability and functionality.
  • Partner with your immediate working team and cross-functional domain experts to develop winning solutions for technically challenging business and customer problems.
  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with the team, partners, and key stakeholders.
  • Documenting activities and know-how developments by creating technical reports and calculation guidelines.

To be successful in this role, we expect you to hold:

  • MSc. in Mechanical engineering or other equivalent engineering fields. Applicants with an MSc in Physics, Mathematics, or BSc. with extensive work experience will also be considered. A Ph.D. is a valuable plus.
  • You should also be interested in internal combustion engines.
  • You possess an analytical mindset and are systematic, curious, open-minded, and focused.
  • You are fluent in English, both written and spoken, and you are solid in MS Office.

Knowledge or practical experience within the following areas and tools are required:

  • Fluid mechanics principle (familiarity with 3D-CFD is considered a plus);
  • Fluid power, including hydraulics and pneumatics;
  • Hydraulics machines;
  • Fluid power automation;
  • System simulation and Optimization tools (familiarity with GT-SUITE, Amesim, Simulink, or similar tools is seen as an advantage);
  • Familiarity with MiL and HiL methodologies aimed at real-time applications;
  • Familiarity with standardized data exchange protocols (FMI/FMU) for co-simulation;
  • Familiarity with AI applied to simulation practices;
  • Knowledge of Matlab and Python programming languages is a plus.

The position will also require:

  • Ability to work in an international environment.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, with an emphasis on innovation.
  • Ability to integrate areas of knowledge and to interface with specialists in different areas.

In this role, travel is required to meet with our customers worldwide. Thus, we hope you will be ready to travel approximately 5%, even though most meetings are held virtually. We do offer an hybrid work setup.

Why you and us?

We at Wärtsilä believe in empowerment, ownership, and taking responsibility for our work. We support each other’s growth, and co-creation is the true basis of our innovation. We dare to see opportunities and take initiative.

We are authentic and honest, and we strongly believe that by being your own true self, you can accomplish so much more. We don’t always get it right the first time, and if mistakes are made, we make sure to learn and grow from them. We want everyone to voice their opinions freely. That is why we have built an environment that empowers you and everyone around you and where you can feel safe and cared for. Are you eager to be part of this ambition?

We have an amazing team, and we are excited about our work and its impact on building sustainable societies. We are looking to find a colleague with this shared passion for intelligent technologies and a sustainable future.
