System Simulation Expert
We are now looking for a
System Simulation Expert
to join Systems Reliability team within R&D and Engineering in Power Supply to drive Wärtsilä's transformation toward decarbonization.
We seek for an intellectually curious engineer with strong mathematical and theoretical expertise, passionate about applying advanced modeling and simulation techniques to tackle complex design and process challenges.
This is a permanent position, with preferred locations in Trieste (Italy), Vaasa (Finland), or Turku (Finland). Some travel (approximately 10%) is required, though most meetings are virtual. We also offer flexible hybrid work arrangements.
What you will be doing
In this role, you will contribute to R&D projects by defining, managing, and executing modeling and simulation activities. Your responsibilities include developing accurate simulation models of varying complexity, from system-level models with predefined component characteristics to detailed component analyses. You will focus on standalone or coupled simulations for engine components and systems, addressing challenges such as alternative fuel integration and supporting decision-making processes.
Your primary focus will be on system-level 1D-CFD simulations, including tasks such as dimensioning components, analyzing steady-state or transient conditions, and evaluating system responses under equilibrium or specific events (e.g., failure states). You will also integrate 1D-CFD models with other engine models, such as hydraulic, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and control subsystems, to optimize overall system performance.
Additionally, you will maintain and develop internal modeling and simulation guidelines, implement state-of-the-art methodologies, and collaborate with 3D-CFD simulations.
As a System Simulation Expert, your key responsibilities will include:
- Supporting designing of innovative products using advanced modeling and calculation methods.
- Supporting troubleshooting efforts for failures or malfunctions within defined protocols.
- Developing and implementing analysis methods to ensure system and component reliability and functionality.
- Collaborating with your team and cross-functional experts to solve complex technical challenges.
- Maintaining effective communication and collaboration with team members, partners, and stakeholders.
- Documenting activities and knowledge development through technical reports and calculation guidelines.
To be successful in this role
You should hold an MSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Candidates with an MSc in Physics, Mathematics, or a BSc with extensive experience will also be considered. A Ph.D. is an advantage.
An interest in internal combustion engines is essential. You have an analytical mindset, are systematic, curious, open-minded, and focused. Fluency in English (written and spoken) and proficiency in MS Office are required.
Required knowledge and experience:
- Strong understanding of fluid mechanics principles (familiarity with 3D-CFD is a plus).
- Expertise in fluid power systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and hydraulic machines.
- Knowledge of fluid power automation.
- Proficiency in 1D system simulation and optimization tools (e.g., GT-SUITE, Amesim, Simulink, or similar).
- Familiarity with MiL and HiL methodologies for real-time applications.
- Experience with standardized data exchange protocols (FMI/FMU) for co-simulation.
- Understanding of AI applications in simulation practices.
- Programming knowledge in Matlab and Python (preferred).
Additional requirements:
- Ability to work effectively in an international and interdisciplinary environment.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a focus on innovation.
- Capability to integrate knowledge across domains and work with specialists in different fields.
