We are now looking for a Technical Expert to join our Investigation Laboratory team on a 12-month fixed term contract. The location for the position is in Trieste (Italy)

 

Your role and responsibilities 

 

In this position, your work will require performing analyses of components received from the field including, but not solely limited to, chemical analysis, mechanical characterization, optical and scanning electron microscopy, fractography and damage characterization. You will write investigation reports comprehensive of collected evidence, conclusions, and recommendations both to internal and external customers in English. You will not be working on this alone, even though the work requires a high level of independency, as you will have the support from component experts and engine team experts in Technical Services.

For us to be the best match, we expect you to support customers through the product lifecycle by your troubleshooting experience, up to retrofit development projects. As an ideal candidate, you have up-to-date knowledge of material analyses methodologies and optimal understanding of mechanics and alteration phenomena.

 

As Technical Expert in the Investigation Laboratory, your work will focus on these responsibilities:

 

  • Carry out failure investigations of engine components returned from the field.
  • Carry out testing of components, including mechanical, dimensional, chemical, and microscopic (low magnification, metallographic optical and electronic) examinations.
  • Keep contact with trusted external laboratories for special services that cannot be found in Wärtsilä.
  • Participate to RCA teams and support the analysis as other experts.
  • Provide feedback of field experience to other departments (supply management, R&D, etc…)
  • Support obsolescence management and refurbishment activity issues related to material selection.

 

Requirements for this position:

 

  • MSc or BSc in Materials Engineering. PhD in relevant subject is a plus.
  • Understanding of material properties, production processes and characterization techniques.
  • Capability to execute advanced microscopy and material analyses such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy-X Ray Dispersive Spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform IR spectroscopy and microscopy, Thermal Gravimetric Analysis, Evolved Gas Analysis, Optical Emission Spectroscopy.
  • Good command in verbal and written English. Experience abroad is a plus.

 

As an ideal candidate you might also have… 

 

  • Knowledge of failure analysis and material damage mechanisms.
  • Understanding of sustainable fuels and existing and emerging decarbonization technologies is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and international environment.

 

In this role, some travel is required to meet with our customers around the world and to investigate big components directly at site. Thus, we hope you to be ready to travel approximately 5% of your time, even though most of the meetings are held virtually.
