Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for a Manager, Business Development.


Reporting to the Senior Director, Global Business Development and Marketing, the Manager, Business Development will have responsibility for driving growth and market share of Wärtsilä’s Energy Storage and Optimization business in the North America region.  Qualified candidates will play a key role in developing the regional go to market strategy, identifying market opportunities and creative business models for energy storage, collaborating with the regional sales organization in support of commercial goals and objectives including pipeline development, contracting, partnerships and key stakeholder engagement.


The successful candidate will possess deep knowledge of US power markets, proven utility scale renewable and energy storage project development and transaction experience; strong communication skills and financial acumen; and experience driving complex deals to closure.


Preferred location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s location in Herndon, VA; Houston, TX; Emeryville, CA or remote in the Continental US.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Has and maintains expertise in battery energy storage technologies and revenue sources and revenue stacking and optimization strategies including development of modelling/analytical tools.
  • Monitors regulatory and market rule changes that could affect battery energy storage revenues or customer need or interest in energy storage projects and develops strategies to find opportunities from these changes or to mitigate impacts from undesirable changes.
  • Qualified candidates will partner with the regional sales team to expand the company’s market share through effective industry partnerships, strategic marketing efforts and support of sales cycle from deal inception, incubation, and conversion.
  • The successful candidate will be a key participant in negotiating project contracts and agreements, pro forma financial/investment modelling and analysis.
  • Mentors and supports sales teams and individuals with customer presentations, proposal development, RFP responses and leads team training and knowledge development programs.
  • Lead development of regional market strategy and plan including cost structure benchmarking, pricing strategy, competitive analysis, partner engagement, project development/deal tracking activities and development of regional plan KPI’s.


Reporting Relationships & Interactions:

  • Reports to Senior Director, Global Business Development and Marketing – Energy Storage
  • Significant internal collaboration with Development, Sales, Engineering, Construction, Legal, and Finance.
  • External interactions with customers/partners such as IPP’s, Utilities, financiers, consultants, EPC’s, regulators, industry groups etc.


Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or technical field; MBA is a strong plus.
  • 5-10 yrs. of industry Business Development leadership experience, with strong external, customer focus and executive level engagement.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the U.S. Energy and Power markets is a must along with utility-scale renewable experience including energy storage.
  • Successful track record of executing complex energy projects and/or transactions.
  • Strong project and process management skills with experience managing multiple teams on simultaneous projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership and collaboration skills.
  • Position will have annual business development targets with senior-level responsibility for meeting business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver financial results and secure results in a matrix environment without direct managerial control.
  • Ability to plan, navigate and negotiate a complex sales process.
  • Experience coordinating activities/priorities with diverse sales teams.
