Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for an Electrical Engineer for the Energy Storage & Optimization business. The role will be part of the Product management and development group.


The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.


This position is eligible for remote work for applicants in the eastern or central timezones. 



  • Design and configure battery energy storage systems including component selection, site layout, cable schedule, auxiliary load estimation, HVAC sizing, and battery sizing/configuration.
  • Design electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and application/logic functional block diagrams in AutoCAD Electrical for energy storage systems including AC, DC, auxiliary power, control, and communications.
  • Review system specifications and develop electrical protection schemes and component selection such as breakers, fuses and relays for AC, DC, and auxiliary power of energy storage system.
  • Design and engineer cable schedules for AC and DC including one-line interpretation, ampacity calculation, and cable/termination selection.
  • Develop control solutions including I/O table, PLC selection, PLC logic development, testing, and deployment of solution into production environment.
  • Review project specification and interconnection requirements, select adequate PCS, and develop/calculate settings and configuration.
  • Evaluate product and system designs and configurations for compliance to relevant industry standards such as NEC, UL9540, UL1741, UL1973, and IEEE1574.
  • Develop test plans for component and manufacturing suppliers and execute them onsite ensuring compliance to functional and QA requirements.
  • Participate in field testing and commissioning activities by developing test plans and collaborating with the field engineering team to execute and troubleshoot as needed.
  • Develop product documentation such as manuals, application notes, and technical specifications.
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and product development programs.


Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • BS EE degree required; MS desired.
  • 3-5 years of electrical engineering experience focusing in power systems and renewable energy.
  • Experience designing and configuring battery energy storage systems and battery enclosures.
  • Ability to design electrical circuits for LV, MV, and DC applications ensuring compliance to common design standard.
  • Working knowledge of industrial control philosophies and communication protocols.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Solving customer’s needs and issues.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Team player attitude internally and externally.
  • Willing to travel 40% of the time.
  • Location: remote, and shall reside in Mid-West, South or North-East of the USA
