HW Engineering Manager - Energy Storage

Wärtsilä's Energy Business is looking for an experienced HW Engineering Manager to be ideally based in our Herndon, VA office.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Materialize through thoughtful planning and execution the ES&O product roadmap including all relevant deliverables such as 3D models, 2D drawings, schematics, manuals, BOM, and manufacturing/installation instructions.
  • Lead, coach, and continuously develop the ES&O HW Engineering team.
  • Plan and execute product development projects on time, on budget, and on scope.
  • Distil and further develop product and system requirements into concreate features and/or specifications for implementation.
  • Qualify, establish, and maintain a resource pool to execute mechanical and electrical designs related to energy storage and power generation systems including balance of plant.
  • Manage execution, budget, and schedule for 3rd party resources leveraged during development projects.
  • Technically qualify, develop, and maintain component and manufacturing suppliers.
  • Plan, execute, and ensure proper introduction to manufacturing environment validating manufacturing partner can in fact properly manufacture our products and solution to specification in an ongoing basis with little to no supervision.
  • Continuously drive improvement and cost reduction activities for our products and solutions.
  • Develop system, component, and sub-component specifications for the various elements of an energy storage system including functional, performance, and compliance requirements.
  • Work cross functionally with product management, delivery, supply chain, sales, marketing, and quality to maintain products and launch new ones.
  • Plan and drive through completion product compliance certification activities through UL, TUV, or other 3rd party.
  • Create and maintain product documentation such as manuals, application guides, etc.
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and development programs.
  • Provide support and technical expertise to the rest of the organization on topics related to our HW solutions and related sub systems and components.

 

Requirements:

  • BS EE/CE/ME degree required; MS desired.
  • +7 years of product development / system engineering experience in the energy industry.
  • +3 years of engineering management experience.
  • Experience with utility scale energy storage systems and balance of plant components.
  • Proficient in electro-mechanical enclosure and panel design and engineering including. conceptualization, mechanical layout, wire routing, interphases, thermal management, safety systems and labelling, support calculations, drafting (2D and 3D), etc.
  • Proficient on FEA and CFD analysis (setup simulation and interpret results).
  • Proficient in thermodynamics and HVAC selection and system design.
  • Proficient with fire suppression systems and related safety standards.
  • Proficient with basic control and monitoring system design and principles.
  • Knowledge of batteries, energy storage, and balance of plant certifications and compliance standards.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Team player attitude internally and externally.
  • Entrepreneurial drive with hunter mind-set.
  • Willing to travel 40% of the time.
