Proposals Engineer

Wärtsilä’s Water and Waste business line (WAW) is at the core of Wärtsilä’s smart marine strategy and fuelling the company purpose by providing state-of-art technology to marine customers, who need to have their vessels operated beyond compliance. WAW is supplying the customer advanced waste management solutions to secure maximized energy efficiency and minimised discharge impact. Additionally, WAW is the market leader in fresh water generation systems for cruise vessels.


The proposals engineer will prepare design proposals, technical documentation and costing basis for bidding into the marine market. He/she will be involved at all stages of the bid process including review of specifications, vessel surveys, option and feasibility studies, concept design, detailed design, and technical-economical evaluations.


The successful candidate will be based out of our office in Poole, United Kingdom.



What are your main tasks and responsibilities?


  • To carry out and be responsible for the design and costing of ships waste management systems to meet customer specifications.
  • Prepare technical proposals according to company procedures, providing integrated technical solutions to ensure cost effective designs including the preparation, issue, and maintenance of technical documentation.
  • Attend and lead vessel surveys, define scope of work, document requirements and present scope of work to subcontractors and ship staff.
  • Co-ordinate with other business areas in particular; sales teams, project delivery and purchasing to ensure design deliveries are produced in accordance with company methodology and on time and budget.
  • Be able to give technical presentations as required both internally and to owners and operators.



What do we expect from you?


  • Degree/NVQ or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering subject
  • Proven experience in large water systems proposals and design
  • Computer literate with a good understanding of Microsoft Office and working knowledge of Auto CAD
  • The ability to work well in a team and independently
  • Strong customer focus, personable and presentable and able to work effectively with internal and external customers
  • Strong technical communication skills – both written and oral
  • Excellent organisational skills
