We are looking for a (Senior) Development Engineer to contribute to our plant automation IT, cyber and SCADA systems, bridging operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) in the Engine Power Plants business unit. The preferred location for this position is Vaasa, Finland (Helsinki and Turku are negotiable), and we offer the possibility of hybrid remote work. 

 
 

Your role and responsibilities 

 

Plant automation & controls focuses on our power plant automation and controls products. We develop and maintain plant automation and control solutions for today´s engine power plants, and tomorrow’s technology stack to implement future remote and autonomous operation vision.  

 

Responsibilities for the position 

  • Develop and maintain IT infrastructure, cyber compliance and SCADA systemsMaintain and develop our plant automation along with the associated server infrastructure. This includes Windows- and Linux-based servers administration for the SCADA and historian systems.  

  • Develop and implement our compliance towards out cyber security targets and legislations such as the IEC-62443 and EU CRA 

  • Support projects and integration with PLCs: Support our ongoing projects by ensuring seamless integration between SCADA and PLC-level controls. Provide expert assistance in project delivery and commissioning phases, collaborating with PLC engineers to validate data flow and control logic.  

  • Contribute to development roadmaps: Participate in strategy work and development roadmap creation for plant automation infrastructure and SCADA solutions. Help identify and implement improvements (e.g. virtualization, remote operations) in line with our technology plan.  

  • Stakeholder communication and support: Train and communicate with internal and external stakeholders on system usage and best practices. Participate in customer meetings and sales support as a domain expert for plant automation topics.  

  • Uphold standards and values: Ensure that our solutions follow Wärtsilä’s values, safety standards, and applicable cyber security practices. Drive our Wärtsilä values and purpose in daily work.  

 

 

Qualifications/to be able to succeed in the position we expect you to have (maybe: This is an entry/mid senior level position, so we would like to see following skills and qualifications) 

 

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Automation Engineering, Information Technology or similar field.  

  • Technical experience: Any of the following, a combination is preferred:  

  • Experience with Windows Server administration (e.g. 2019/2022) and basic Linux system administration.  

  • Hands-on experience with industrial SCADA/HMI systems is highly valued (experience with WOIS/sWOIS or similar SCADA platforms – AVEVA/Atvise/Ignition/WinCC OA or Unified is a plus).  

  • Programming and automation: Scripting skills (PowerShell, Bash/Shell, or Python) for automation and tool development are appreciated. Basic understanding of PLC programming or configuration (IEC 61131-3 based languages) and control logic is required to facilitate SCADA–PLC integration 

  • Fluent user of AI-tools and models for software development 

  • Networking and cyber security: Familiarity with network configuration and administration (Cisco or Fortinet equipment)  

  • Knowledge of OT cyber security standards such as IEC 62443 

  • Experience in generative AI and ability to coordinate AI driven software development 

  • Experience of thermal power plants and field work experience is seen as a plus 

  • Soft skills: Open-minded attitude, teamwork capability, and ability to work independently. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken, are required (other language skills are a plus). A collaborative mindset and willingness to continuously learn are essential.
