We are looking for a (Senior) Expert, Power Systems to strengthen our expertise in power systems, modelling and simulations, and grid code requirements. The preferred location for this position is Vaasa, Finland, but other Wärtsilä locations in Finland are also negotiable. We offer the possibility of hybrid work.
Your role and responsibilities
Wärtsilä Energy Business is developing and delivering competitive products and solutions for power systems across the globe. Our scope ranges from microgrids to large interconnected grids and from baseload to balancing markets.
Power systems worldwide are undergoing a major transformation, where the share of synchronous generation decreases in the generation mix. To be prepared for the transformation, regulators and grid operators are developing new requirements and novel market mechanisms. Wärtsilä Energy is committed to decarbonising electricity generation and enabling 100% renewable power systems.
The Power Systems team has a critical role in ensuring Wärtsilä’s market position, regulatory compliance, and technical credibility worldwide. The team’s work has a direct impact on product competitiveness, regulatory acceptance, and customer confidence across global markets.
As a (Senior) Expert, Power Systems, you will act as a technical authority in power systems, combining deep analytical work with leadership of development activities and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. The (Senior) Expert, Power Systems will report to Jesse Asikainen, General Manager, Power Systems.
Your work will focus on these responsibilities:
- Perform modelling and simulation of Wärtsilä’s synchronous engine power plant solutions using tools such as PowerFactory and PSCAD
- Analyse test results, assess performance, and evaluate global requirements to ensure compliance and performance of Wärtsilä engine power plants
- Lead development activities, measurement campaigns, or technical project support cases as part of your daily activities
- Develop and improve ways of working by applying, for example, Python automation and the use of AI
To be able to succeed in the position, we expect you to have:
- Master’s degree or higher in Power Engineering or a closely related field
- More than 6 years of experience in power system modelling, simulations, grid code requirements, and compliance
- Analytical mindset and ability to distinguish relevant information
- Experience with power system control, stability, and design
- Ability to translate and explain complex technical topics in a clear and understandable way for non‑technical audiences
- Ability to collaborate in a team and support other team members
- Fluent written and spoken English
Beneficial skills and abilities:
- Ability to write concise reports
- Ability to work in a consultative manner with internal and external stakeholders
- Experience with synchronous machines
- Experience with simulation automation using Python or similar tools and practical application of AI in engineering workflows
