Additive Manufacturing Engineer

We are looking for an Additive Manufacturing Engineer with a main responsibility in developing and implementing the application of AM at Wärtsilä. The preferred location for this position is Vaasa, Finland.
  
Your role and responsibilities  
 
As an Additive Manufacturing Engineer your work will include working on developing solutions as part of cross-functional collaboration internally and with external partners. We want to push the boundary of AM in all the fields we are working on. The tasks can also be adjusted based on your individual skills and interests. You’ll be working as a part of an innovative and energetic additive manufacturing team with diverse expertise.
 
Your work will focus on these responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and Validate AM Applications: Support the design and validation of new AM applications in Wärtsilä products and operations, ensuring their integration with Wärtsilä’s broader technological and operational goals.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, supporting the adoption of design for AM (DfAM) inside other technical departments as well the testing of new AM related application together with Testing Engineers. 
  • New Methodologies and Concepts: Scout for innovative AM software, machines, processes and solutions that might improve AM Team capabilities as well AM application’s performance and quality.
  • Business Case Development: Develop comprehensive business cases for AM applications and present these cases to technology owners and management.
  • Innovation: Lead and support innovation efforts by working within cross-functional teams from different Business Lines to explore new possibilities where AM can generate value for Wärtsilä products.
  • Network Contributions: Contribute to the Finnish Additive Manufacturing Ecosystem (FAME) and foster external collaboration to stay at the forefront of an advancing industry.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Advocacy: Promote AM knowledge and system-level thinking throughout Wärtsilä, influencing the company’s mindset and approach to integrating AM across different product lines.

 
To be able to succeed in the position, we expect you to have: 

 

  • Experience in 3D modeling and implementing Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles with a focus on system integration.
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Mechanical or Material Engineering; further education or specialization in systems engineering or related fields is an advantage.
  • Proven experience in both metal and polymer additive manufacturing technologies, with a strong understanding of their integration into broader manufacturing and product ecosystems.
  • Strong proficiency in English; skills in Finnish, Italian or Swedish are a plus.
  • Collaboration Skills: Ability to work with various teams to identify opportunities, align objectives and deliver integrated solutions.
  • A can-do attitude, strong interpersonal skills and a track record of working successfully within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Additional skills/experience in system engineering, project management or manufacturing processes outside AM are highly valued.
