Digital Systems Engineer

Wärtsilä is a world leader in marine technology and leading the industry's transformation towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. With the world’s widest portfolio and service network, we – Wärtsilians - deliver efficient, safe and sustainable integrated products and solutions to enhance the business of our customers. The opportunities presented through digitalisation and new technologies are offering a new era of shipping. Did you know that shipping is the world’s most efficient mode of transportation and that 88% of the world's trade is carried by sea?

We want to change the course towards an interconnected and cleaner maritime future and are constantly on the lookout for future-oriented talent to join our team and to work towards enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services - together. Are you ready to jump onboard?

We are always on the lookout for a talent with a growth mindset – are you the one?

We are looking for a Digital Systems Engineer with a main responsibility in operating and evolving our operational data and IoT infrastructure for predictive maintenance and performance optimization. The preferred location for this position is Vaasa or Helsinki, Finland. We offer the possibility of hybrid work.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Digital Systems Engineer your work will include coordinating support activities, maintaining and improving our data pipelines and IoT device fleet, and collaborating closely with field engineers, developers, and diagnostics experts. The tasks can be adjusted based on your individual skills and interests. You’ll be working as a part of our collaborative Lifecycle Support team with diverse expertise. This is a team-centric, support- and operations-focused role where working well with others is crucial. Not everything will be new every day; you can grow into the role and we will adjust expectations for the right candidate.

Your work will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Coordinate issue and request handling (monitoring, troubleshooting, change requests)
  • Maintain, upgrade, and deploy configurations for IoT devices and data pipelines
  • Operate and improve the operational data infrastructure across vessels and power plants
  • Monitor platform health and resolve incidents with root-cause analysis
  • Identify risks and implement mitigation and cybersecurity controls
  • Collaborate with field engineers, developers, and diagnostics experts to deliver solutions
  • Support network connectivity (routing, VPN, firewalls) for onboard and cloud systems

To be able to succeed in the position, we expect you to have:

  • Experience with IT networks (firewalls, routing, VPN); service-minded problem solving
  • Strong troubleshooting across OSI/TCP/IP and log analysis
  • Basic cybersecurity knowledge for OT/IoT environments
  • Clear communication; team player who can also work independently
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT/computer & network sciences or equivalent experience
  • Fluency in English, spoken and written
  • Familiarity with vendors like Cisco, Hirschmann, Westermo, or Fortigate is a plus

These are preferences rather than strict must-haves — we have time for you to learn and grow.

Why you and us?

We at Wärtsilä believe in empowerment, ownership and taking responsibility of our work. We support each other’s growth, and co-creation is the true basis of our innovation. We have courage to see opportunities and take initiative.

We are authentic and honest, and we strongly believe in that by being your own true self you can accomplish so much more. We don’t always get it right the first time, and if mistakes are made, we make sure to learn and grow from them. We want everyone to voice their opinions freely. That is why we have built an environment that empowers you and everyone around you, and where you can feel safe and cared for. Are you eager to be part of this ambition?

We have an amazing team, and we are excited about our work and the impact it has on building sustainable societies. We are looking to find a colleague with this shared passion for smart technologies and a sustainable future.
