Expert - Safety Engineering

We are now looking for an Expert – Process Safety, to develop the power plants of the future operating on sustainable fuels. As an Expert in Process Safety within Wärtsilä’s Energy Business Technology function, you will play a key role in  executing the development roadmap for zero- and low-carbon Energy Business power plant solutions. As a domain expert, you will work in close cooperation between Engine R&D, Power Plant Technology, Energy Services and Sales to develop and deliver new technologies based on sustainable fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol.  
 
Location information:
 
The preferred location for this permanent position is Vaasa, Helsinki, or Turku, Finland. Other locations in the European time zone may be considered.
 
Your main responsibilities are: 
 

  • Lead safety and risk assessment and mitigation work for sustainable fuel-operated power plants (hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, biofuels)
  • Apply established methodology (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA) to develop effective process safety strategies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the integration of process safety principles into design, operation, and maintenance activities
  • Serve as point of reference for safety and risk-related standards and guidelines
  • Provide technical support within own discipline for sales, project delivery and non-conformity organisations
  • Create training material and conduct internal trainings within own area of expertize

 
Requirements for the position: 
 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in relevant area
  • Proven experience of process safety engineering
  • Strong knowledge of process safety standards and regulation 
  • Self-going with motivation to learn and grow professionally
  • Good communication, negotiation and team working skills
  • Ability to assess cross-disciplinary impacts and harness synergies  
  • Experience in power plant technology; engines, gas turbines, oil&gas and/or fuel cells 
  • Experience in working with hydrogen, ammonia, methanol is a strong merit
  • Goal-oriented mindset, analytical skills and you enjoy problem-solving
  • Fluent written and spoken English
