Master's Thesis Worker, Model Based Definition (MBD)

Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä's purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

We are looking for a Master's Thesis Worker to join our Engineering Innovation & Advanced Concepts team and work on thesis topics directly connected to customer delivery projects.

The role is based in Finland, with the MBD team located primarily in Vaasa. Thesis work can be conducted partly remotely, but periodic on-site work in Vaasa is required for collaboration and pilot activities. The thesis duration is approximately 6–8 months, with a flexible start.

You will work on a thesis with direct industrial impact, where your results can influence how products are defined and delivered in real projects. This assignment is grounded in real parts, real designs, and real downstream usage, not simulated cases. You will receive structured guidance while being trusted with responsibility and autonomy.

The thesis can start as soon as a suitable candidate is identified. The final scope and topic will be agreed together with the student and their university.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Master's Thesis Worker in the MBD team, you will work on applying and validating Model‑Based Definition in real engineering contexts. The thesis topic will be refined during the project and shaped into a master's thesis in cooperation with your university.

You will work closely with experienced engineers and receive guidance throughout the assignment, while taking responsibility for execution, analysis, and conclusions.

Your master's thesis work will focus on:

  • Studying the use of Model‑Based Definition (MBD) as part of modern mechanical design practices
  • Understanding how design definition information flows from design to downstream stakeholders
  • Identifying factors that influence successful adoption of MBD
  • Structuring findings into usable insights and guidance for engineering contexts
  • Contributing to internal understanding through selected activities, as appropriate

To be able to succeed in the position, we expect you to have:

  • Ongoing Master's studies in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or a similar field
  • Possibility to work on‑site in Vaasa when needed
  • Strong analytical and structured problem‑solving skills
  • Interest in how design decisions impact manufacturing and delivery
  • Willingness to work with real design constraints and incomplete information
  • Ability to document conclusions clearly and precisely

Experience with Model‑Based Definition or downstream manufacturing data is an advantage.

Why you and us?

We at Wärtsilä believe in empowerment, ownership, and taking responsibility for our work. We support each other's growth, and co‑creation is the true basis of our innovation. We have the courage to see opportunities and take initiative.

We are authentic and honest, and we strongly believe that by being your own true self, you can accomplish so much more. We don't always get it right the first time, and if mistakes are made, we make sure to learn and grow from them. We want everyone to voice their opinions freely. That is why we have built an environment that empowers you and everyone around you, and where you can feel safe and cared for. Are you eager to be part of this ambition?

We have an amazing team, and we are excited about our work and the impact it has on building sustainable societies. We are looking to find a colleague with this shared passion for smart technologies and a sustainable future.
