Power Systems Engineer

We are seeking a Power Systems Engineer to join our Decarbonisation Services team in Finland but other Wärtsilä locations in Europe could be considered.

The Challenge:

The power systems around the globe are undergoing major transformations where the share of synchronous generation is decreasing in the generation mix. At Wärtsilä Energy we are committed to decarbonisation of energy and enabling 100 % renewable power generation. To be prepared for the transformation, regulators and grid operators are developing the requirements and novel market mechanisms. To ensure Wärtsilä’s market position and competitiveness, we must develop, deliver and maintain solutions that comply with these evolving grid codes and market mechanisms.

 

The Role:

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Power Systems Engineer to join our Decarbonisation Services team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in power system analysis and grid code compliance to ensure our solutions are both impactful and compliant. You will study dynamic behaviours, develop control concepts to optimize reliability and operations, and defining what the operation philosophy will be in the customer network.

 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct modelling and simulations to validate power system control concepts.
    • Analyse grid codes, standards and regulations related to microgrids and renewable energy requirements and identify how Wärtsilä’s solutions comply with them.
  • Develop and implement EMS strategies for optimal operation of microgrids
  • Develop power system control (PMS) methods
  • Collaborate with team members, suppliers, and partners to co-create developments.
  • Uphold and drive Wärtsilä values and purpose.

 

Requirements: 

  • You hold a Master’s degree or higher in Electric power engineering, with 3+ years of relevant working experience.
  • Experience with power system modelling and simulation tools, such as PowerFactory, PSCAD, or others
  • Proven experience in power system studies, microgrid design, or renewable energy integration
  • Strong experience in power system control and stability
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills 
  • Strong planning and execution abilities.
    • Positive, results-oriented mindset and self-driven approach.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Fluent written and spoken English 

 

Skills/experience that are seen as a plus: 

  • Proficiency in power system modelling and simulation using PowerFactory and PSCAD.
  • Coordination skills; suppliers, internal and external customers 
  • Python programming
  • Experience of grid operations or with energy generation or storage asset operations.
  • Experience with hybrid power systems and off-grid solutions
  • Familiarity with EMS functionality and its role in microgrid operations, such as dispatch optimisation
  • Ability to think out-of-the-box and challenge conventional ways of working  
  • Strong analytical skills, as well as creative thinking and problem-solving skills  

 

Location is within Finland in proximity to a Wärtsilä office, preferable Helsinki or Vaasa.  

 

All new Wärtsilä employees in Finland will attend occupational health check, including the drug test/screening. The legislation of the country followed when person is located outside of Finland.
