Service Designer



Position description

Wärtsilä’s corporate-level Design team plays a key role in the digital transformation of our company. Being a Service Designer at Wärtsilä offers a unique opportunity to disrupt traditional businesses on a global scale. As part of a small but highly skilled and focused team you will have a direct impact on safety, efficiency, sustainability and predictability of our customer's operations, helping both them and Wärtsilä grow.

Guided by our purpose of enabling sustainable societies with smart technologies we are taking a major step in building new co-creation, testing and production facilities in Vaasa, Finland by 2021. The Service Designer will primarily be working on this Smart Technology Hub project, aligning diverse stakeholder groups and helping them discover common areas of benefit. Ultimately, we want to co-create our new facilities and way of working in them together with our extensive partner network. Facilitating this process will be a demanding but rewarding challenge.


We are looking for someone who is humble yet persistent and can facilitate the creation of visions that people want to follow. The ideal person for this role is comfortable with being in close contact with both internal and external stakeholders and is an expert at finding explicit and tacit needs from fragmented sources, as well as in identifying common ground and mutual benefits. To be successful in this role you need to be highly self-motivated and organised, and driven by a passion to make a larger impact on a strategic level, even if it initially requires taking many smaller steps.  



  • Plan and facilitate workshops that benefit alignment, individually support all workstreams that are part of the Smart Technology Hub and communicate our user journeys to relevant stakeholders.
  • Support business stakeholder engagement and requirements gathering targeting the creation of a strong ecosystem around the Smart Technology Hub.
  • Help define and prototype a co-creative way of working in selected projects with partners and customers.
  • Drive and facilitate a coherent digital vision and experience of the Smart Technology Hub; ensure a common digital approach and leveraging of synergies between different work-streams, projects, and activities.
  • Develop and manage the documentation related to the own functional area.   
  • The seniority and salary level can be negotiated based on task-relevant experience.


  • BA or MA in Service Design or other relevant design subject.
  • BA or Bsc in Design, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering and Management or similar with a strong Service Design track record also possible.
  • 4-7 years of relevant professional design experience.
  • Strong background with qualitative user research.
  • Good ability to translate brands into experiences. Past involvement in visitor experience projects is an advantage.
  • Experience in Agile development methods.
  • Courage and passion to drive change by own example in a large organisation.
  • Experience in B2B sector is an advantage.
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Familiarity with multiple languages and cultures is an advantage.
  • Available to travel 20-40 days/year.
